We have Grizzly Bear hunts in the spring and the fall. During the spring or fall hunts the Black Bears may be taken for an additional trophy fee. Our Spring Bear Hunts are weather-depending (when the bears wake up) during April and May. Fall Grizzly opens with Dall Sheep, August 10th and runs through our fall hunting season. Our outfitter has one of the areas in Alaska a Grizzly can be taken by a hunter every year instead of one every four years like most areas. Their bear population supports this harvest. Their Grizzlies never leave the Chisana Valley- they are true Mountain Grizzlies. However they do travel a lot, spend time in the timber and around the glaciers eating berries and digging ground squirrels. The cold breeze that always blows off the ice makes these bears prime out early, and keeps the coats thick. With long, silky, prime coats, there is no better hide in Alaska. Good binoculars and patience is what it takes to be a good Grizzly Bear hunter. You must be willing to sit and glass- the bears will do the moving. The outfitter will also look where they have killed sheep and moose as the bears will sometimes visit these spots. You do not need hip boots.
